The preparatory meetings for the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education were launched on 18 August 2021 at the Geneva Hotel in Amman. The meetings were organized by the Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE), in cooperation with the Arab House for Adult Education and Development (AHEAD) and the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (DVV International). The meetings aimed to identify the key issues and challenges related to adult education in Jordan and propose main directions to be included in a unified paper, to be presented within a regional Arab framework outlining the main regional recommendations to be submitted to the Seventh International Conference.<\/p>

In her welcoming remarks, ANHRE Executive Director, Fotouh Younes, highlighted the objectives and expected outcomes of the meetings. She explained that the overall goal is to provide a national perspective on the issues, challenges, and forward-looking strategies related to youth and adult learning and education policies and activities in Jordan. The meetings also aim to analyze the status of adult learning and education and related trends in Jordan, identify the main drivers of adult learning, present different approaches to providing adult education, and highlight examples of good practices, challenges, and lessons learned, particularly in relation to linking adult education with development.<\/p>

Younes noted that the discussions addressed future prospects for adult learning, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adult education, and the contribution of adult learning and education to promoting active citizenship. The discussions also analyzed the uses, potential, risks, and impact of information and communication technologies on adult learning, while highlighting global citizenship, economic empowerment, long-term policies, governance, and budgets.<\/p>

She added that the expected outcome of these meetings is the development of a final document that includes recommendations for renewing policies and strategies in the field of adult learning and education in Jordan.<\/p>

The meeting included several sessions. The first session, titled \u201cA Look at the Current Reality,\u201d<\/strong> was facilitated by Dima Karadsheh. Speakers included Khuzama Al-Rasheed from the Jordan Coalition for Education for All, who addressed the reality of adult learning and education within the work of civil society organizations in Jordan; Fotouh Younes from ANHRE, who discussed the contribution of adult learning and education to promoting active global citizenship while taking national specificities into consideration; and Nedal Khalifeh, Director of Safa Company for Development and Training, who analyzed the uses, opportunities, risks, and impact of information and communication technologies on adult learning and education, particularly for women and youth.<\/p>

The second session, facilitated by former educator Kulthum Mreish, was titled \u201cInspiring Practices.\u201d<\/strong> It presented different approaches to providing adult learning and education, as well as examples of good practices and lessons learned. Speakers included Samar Dudin from Ruwwad Al-Tanmeya and Sara Al-Baz, Projects Coordinator at Ruwwad, who discussed contextualized adult education support through the \u201cJeera\u201d initiative, a campaign led by Ruwwad\u2019s young men and women in local neighborhoods. Rabee Zureikat, founder of Zikra Initiative for Popular Learning, also spoke about the organization and its experience in wheat cultivation, including ways to scale and share this experience.<\/p>

The third session, titled \u201cLooking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities,\u201d<\/strong> was facilitated by Basma Al-Awamleh. Speakers included Leila Naffa, Program Director at the Arab Women Organization, and activist Ikhlas Ziyadat, who discussed challenges and opportunities for adult learning and education for women and youth in Jordan in light of globalization, the COVID-19 pandemic, and emerging developments. Dr. Ghassan Qteit from the Jordan River Foundation and Kazem Al-Kafiri from the Family and Childhood Protection Society addressed approaches to providing adult learning and education. Khuzama Al-Rasheed from the Jordan Coalition for Education for All also discussed future prospects for adult learning, including the vision, strategies, and directions for adult learning and education, and its role in facilitating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4.<\/p>

At the end of the meeting, an open discussion was facilitated by Khalil Radwan from the Jordan Coalition for Education for All.
