Under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Mohammad Qteishat, Director General of the Media Commission, and with the participation of the President of the Teachers\u2019 Syndicate, Dr. Ahmad Al-Hajaya, the Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE) and the Jordan Coalition for Education held the opening ceremony of the 2019 Global Action Week for Education under the theme \u201cMy Education, My Right.\u201d<\/strong> The event took place on Monday, 29 April 2019, in Amman, Jordan, with the participation of educators, media professionals, academics, representatives of civil society organizations, and institutions concerned with education.<\/p>

The ceremony included a discussion session titled \u201cThe Role of Investigative Journalism in Making the Right to Public, Inclusive, Equitable, Quality, and Free Education a Reality.\u201d<\/strong> The session aimed to highlight the importance of investigative journalism in influencing education issues and developing civil society tools to build an institutional approach based on holding governments and relevant institutions accountable for fulfilling the standards of the right to education and ensuring the effective implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.<\/p>

This activity was held as part of the 2019 Global Action Week for Education, implemented this year under the theme \u201cMy Education, My Right.\u201d<\/strong> It is an international campaign that seeks to unite all voices around the same issue and present systematic and unified demands to decision-makers in the field of education. Millions of people around the world participate in this occasion annually in nearly 100 countries.<\/p>

In his remarks, the patron of the ceremony, H.E. Mr. Mohammad Qteishat, emphasized that the role of investigative journalism lies in uncovering and documenting hidden information, not only reporting publicly available information. He stressed the need to focus on unreported issues that include statistics, figures, and sensitive matters that delay the realization of public, inclusive, equitable, quality, accessible, and free education for all. He noted that there are key factors delaying this process, and that investigative journalism has a responsibility to uncover them. He also emphasized the importance of employing investigative journalism to serve education and its issues, noting that student bullying against teachers is among the most important hidden issues that investigative journalists should examine, and one that the Teachers\u2019 Syndicate may need to address.<\/p>

Dr. Ahmad Al-Hajaya, President of the Teachers\u2019 Syndicate, also emphasized the government\u2019s role in guaranteeing the right to free, quality public education that respects diversity and differences and upholds equity and inclusion. He stressed the importance of focusing on teachers\u2019 rights, ensuring their dignity, and providing them with training before and during service, given their central role in ensuring quality and equitable education.<\/p>

Ms. Fotouh Younes, Executive Director of the Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE), stated that the Jordan Coalition for Education was established in 2009 at the initiative of ANHRE, with the aim of reminding the government of its international commitments to improving the quality of education, ensuring openness to challenges, recognizing them, addressing them, and following up on them. She emphasized that education is the key to rights, and that the government should be urged to prioritize education spending and increase the education development budget.<\/p>

Mr. Khalil Radwan, President of the Jordan Coalition for Education, noted that this event, held as part of the 2019 Global Action Week for Education, marks the beginning of a training workshop for a group of journalists focusing on the right to quality education.<\/p>

During the discussion session, titled \u201cThe Role of Investigative Journalism in Making the Right to Public, Inclusive, Equitable, Quality, and Free Education a Reality,\u201d<\/strong> the focus was placed on the role of investigative journalism and its forms of influence within political and social contexts, as well as within the broader democratic process. The session also highlighted its role in producing knowledge based on a scientific approach, making it a trusted source in the public sphere. Mr. Ahmad Abu Khalil spoke about expanding access to education in Jordan, Mr. Musab Al-Shawabkeh addressed the coverage of education issues in investigative journalism, and Ms. Hiba Abu Taha discussed the role of media in highlighting equitable education that takes women\u2019s rights into account.<\/p>

In conclusion, participants reflected on the key issues raised, which play a prominent role in making the right to public, inclusive, equitable, quality, and free education a reality. Participants presented several recommendations, most notably the need to work jointly and in parallel on all elements of the education process. This requires adopting a qualification and training approach for teachers before service as a core and priority step for education reform, as well as ensuring continuous in-service training for teachers so they can keep pace with developments.<\/p>

The recommendations also emphasized improving the financial, psychological, and social conditions of teachers; increasing education spending in light of the priorities of the Ministry of Education\u2019s new strategic plan; shifting education from a job-based description to a professional one; conducting a comprehensive review of the Education Law to achieve quality education in line with international standards; developing curricula toward a more human-centered approach to education; transforming educational institutions into spaces where knowledge becomes wisdom; promoting a culture of dialogue, participation, and human rights; and ensuring the realization and activation of the right to education for people deprived of education due to ongoing wars in the region or policies that deny many this right.
